In an effort to promote this website, I have decided to start a new series of posts called, "Reading With Zac." I really want this space to be an online resource for keeping people up to date on activities in my creative life, but in lieu of anything serious happening in my playwriting career I want this space to be used for something on a regular basis… and hence a reading series has been born.
As many of you know I read quite a lot. What you may not know is that I tend to keep a reading journal as I read with detailed notes and thoughts I have as I work my way through a book. It’s one of my quirky habits. Earlier this year I received a rather large collection of boxes full of plays. Many of these plays I’ve read before, but many of them I have not. In order to continue the dialogue on this website I have decided to start sharing a small portion of my journal with you, and discuss the works that I’m currently reading.
To make this whole process a little more exciting, and less cumbersome for me, I’ve decided that this series should be dictated entirely by chance. On that note I will be selecting plays from the boxes entirely at random using a blind draw. I have not sorted, nor alphabetized these works in any way because I have yet to acquire shelves for my new apartment in DC. So I have nearly an entire closet completely filled from floor to ceiling with boxes of books. Among these boxes are those given to me by Paul Lim when he was cleaning out his office at KU.
Every week I will draw a new play from the closet full of books and read it. I will then write a post on this website sharing some of my notes from my reading journal. If I should happen to finish a play in less than a week and post a response early, I will then issue a new announcement with the title of the work I will be tackling for the remainder of the week. All posts will arrive on Friday. For longer works, or collections of plays, you may see brief posts arrive on Monday or Wednesday in order to break up the posts in some logical fashion.
I will continue to post news and information regarding playwriting opportunities, and other updates on my creative endeavors, but moving forward “Reading with Zac” will be the fuel that keeps this monstrosity going.
Thanks for stopping by, and if all goes according to plan you’ll have reason to do so in the future thanks to this new project.
